Letter to "My dear Kinsley", [1863] November 19.

General Wild, Norfolk, Va., writes his African American servant [Benjamin F.?] Kinsley concerning his plans to come to Philadelphia; mentions that General Butler has gone to New Bern; thanks him for some raspberry syrup which he and Col. [James Chaplin] Beecher enjoyed on Folly Island; reports that Kinsley's cousin was delayed by sickness; lists the 5 regiments he commands; and offers to accomodate Kinsley at his sister's.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler. His father served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later became a privateer, dying of yellow fever in the West Indies not long after Benjamin was born.
